Coily hair is unique among hair types. No other hair type boasts quite the volume that coily hair does. In this fourth and final segment of our deeper dive into hair types, we’ll take a closer look at coily hair. This type of hair has so much personality and can be nothing short of fabulous, especially when it’s well taken care of.

The Characteristics of Coily Hair

This type of hair tends to be more delicate than other hair types. It needs a lot of moisture, which can come in the form of conditioning masques, creams, butters, and more. It’s important to be super gentle with coily hair. If you’re too rough with it, it’s bound to break. Coily hair comes in three subtypes, just like the others: 4A, 4B, and 4C.

  • 4A: an S-shaped coil that is tight enough to fit around a chopstick
  • 4B: curls that form a zigzag pattern
  • 4C: similar to 4B, but tighter and more fragile

Coily Hair Care

Moisturizing is crucial for people with coily hair. This hair type tends to be more dry naturally, so finding products that work to keep your hair moisturized will be super important. You may need a combination of products. Some have found success by using a leave-in conditioner followed by an oil and finished off with a cream. The other really important thing for taking care of coily hair is to be gentle with it. Use a wide-toothed comb and comb through it from ends to roots. Wear a silk bonnet at night to protect your hair from friction generated by your pillow.

Styling Tips for Coily Hair

Because Type 4 hair is so delicate and needs so much moisture, it’s a good idea to wear your hair in styles that allow moisturizing products to penetrate it. Weaves and braids can look fabulous, but try not to wear them for too long. Spending too much time in these styles can leave your hair vulnerable to drying out. Once the cuticle opens, it becomes easy for strands to catch on one another and break. Try using shingling to accentuate and define your curls and avoid using heat as much as possible.

So there you have it. Whether your hair is coily, curly, wavy, or straight, it can all be beautiful. The key is to understand what your hair needs, how to take good care of it, and the best ways to style it. Once you know that, you’ll be that much closer to having a good hair day every single day.
