Basic Acne Prevention Everyone Should Be Doing
There are few things worse than getting ready for a night out only to discover that your skin has broken out. Acne affects tens of millions of people in the United States alone to some degree. So what can you do about it? Fortunately there are some basic things that everyone can do to help prevent acne.
Use a Basic Skincare Routine
A basic skincare routine typically includes cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and sunscreen (in the morning). Ideally, you’ll go through your routine in the morning and again at night before bed. It’s not something that has to take more than a few minutes, especially if you’re keeping it simple. Even a simple routine can do wonders for keeping your skin clean and clear of impurities, dead skin cells, and excess oil that can prompt breakouts, while keeping your face moisturized to protect the health of your skin.
Limit Sun Exposure
Did you know that sun exposure can lead to breakouts? This is because sun exposure leads to your epidermis becoming drier and thicker, which prompts your body to produce more oil. Sun exposure is also problematic because it can cause inflammation and redness. To protect your skin, use non comedogenic sunscreen with SPF 30 at a minimum and apply it 15-30 minutes before being out in the sun.
Don't Touch Your Face
Remember how the whole point of your skincare routine is to keep your skin free of excess oils and impurities? If you go around touching your face all the time, you’re just introducing those right back onto your skin. Not only that, but you could be introducing bacteria to your facial skin as well. It’s better to just not touch your face as much as possible. Don’t prop your chin on your hand, rub your face, and definitely avoid picking at or popping pimples with your fingers. Just leave your face alone.
While things like a basic skincare routine, limiting sun exposure, and not touching your face are not going to magically clear up your face overnight, they can help prevent acne breakouts. Depending on your skin and its needs, you may need a more intensive acne prevention routine. Still, these steps can provide a basic foundation that everyone can use to reduce their risk of an acne breakout.
