No matter what your hair type, it’s a sure thing that you want it to look its best. The thing is, if you want your hair to look its best, you need to know what your hair type is. From there, you need to know what it takes to keep your hair type in good condition. So how do you go about taking good care of fine hair?

Use Shampoo and Conditioner Wisely

Washing and conditioning your hair is a normal part of taking care of your hair. It seems like it should be a pretty straightforward process, and for the most part, it is. There is some nuance, however. Those who have fine hair should avoid products that have sulfates, as they can weaken the hair over time. Using a clarifying shampoo once a week can help you keep product from building up and leaving your hair limp. While we’re on the subject, don’t shampoo too much. Two or three times a week is enough for people with fine hair. Use dry shampoo if you feel the need to clean it more frequently. When it comes to conditioning, use a small amount. A dollop about the size of a nickel should do the trick. Use it from the middle to the end of your hair, avoiding the scalp.

Be Smart about Drying and Heat

Wet hair is more vulnerable to being damaged, and wet fine hair even more so. Allow your hair to air dry until it’s at least 75% dry. Feel free to blow dry your hair after that if you want. Try doing it upside down for extra volume. Do be careful about how much heat styling you do though. Fine hair is more vulnerable to heat damage. Be careful about how long you’re exposing your hair to heat, as well as the frequency. Use hair rollers to create curls without heat.

Be Gentle

The running theme with taking good care of fine hair is to be gentle with it. Brushes with soft, flexible bristles will be the kindest to your hair. Take care as you brush it. Avoid the temptation to just yank the brush through any tangles that have developed. Speaking of which, you may be able to cut down on the tangles if you use a silk pillowcase at night. The reduced friction from the silk cuts down on both frizz and breakage.

Having fine hair can be wonderful. Advantages of fine hair include faster drying time, quicker styling, and a reduced need for hair products. If you want to fall in love with your fine hair, you need to know how to take care of it. Be smart about what you use on your hair and what you do with it so it can be as healthy and strong as possible.
