Tips for Finding Your Perfect Nail Shape

You can tell a lot about a person from looking at their hands. The nails in particular are a perfect opportunity for self-expression. Everything from the color to the shape can have a strong impact on how your hands look. In fact, the shape of your nails is the perfect place to start crafting your look. So how do you find your perfect nail shape?

Basic Nail Shapes

Let’s start by discussing some of the basic shapes. In many cases, the name is pretty much a giveaway for how the shape looks. Square nails are flat on the top and have sharp corners with straight sides. Round nails have straight sides as well, but are rounded along the top to follow the natural curve of the fingertip. Oval is similar, but are more filed down on the sides to create a more elongated look. Almond nails are more tapered still, creating a, well, almond look. Stiletto nails are generally long and come to a point at the end. Ballerina or coffin nails are similar, but have a square tip instead.

Considering Length

The length you want your nails at will matter when it comes to choosing your nail shape. The fact is, it’s not technically a stiletto nail if it’s too short. It turns into more of an arrowhead or mountain shape. Ballerina nails are also meant to be worn long. Other shapes, such as square or oval, work well enough regardless of length.

Your Hands

You’ll need to take your hands into consideration, of course. If you have shorter fingers, shapes that elongate your fingers can be especially flattering. Oval and almond shapes are particularly good in that regard. In fact, it’s hard to find hands that almond-shaped nails don’t look good on. Those with longer hands tend to pull off longer, more dramatic shapes such as stiletto or ballerina shapes with relative ease. Take some time to review different nail shapes before settling on one for your hands.

Your nails provide the perfect finishing touch to your every look. It all starts with finding the right shape for you, and then the right length. There are some general guidelines that you can use to help you find your perfect nail shape, but ultimately, the decision is up to you and your own preferences, no matter what anyone else may tell you.
