When was the last time you really looked at your hands? If it’s been a while, take a few moments now to look them over. Look at your skin and your nails. How are they looking? If you haven’t given them much attention, you might find them looking a little worse for wear. Your cuticles may especially be suffering. If your cuticles look like they could use a little TLC, there are some things you can do.

Moisturize

It’s hard to imagine that there’s a single part of your body that doesn’t benefit from receiving the proper amount of moisturizing. Goodness knows your cuticles aren’t one. Regularly moisturizing your cuticles helps keep them soft. There are plenty of different ways you can do this. If you need a budget-friendly approach to help keep them soft between manicures, applying Vaseline can do the trick. There are ointments and creams specifically for cuticles that you can use as well.

Push Back With Care

Long nails are often considered more ideal than shorter nails. Pushing your cuticles back can help them look longer, but you should do so with care. The purpose of the cuticle is to protect the place your nail grows from. You leave yourself vulnerable to infection and nail problems if you damage them. If you choose to push your cuticles back, be careful and gentle with them. Make sure you only use clean tools whenever you do it.

Avoid Damaging Them

Damaging your cuticles is a guaranteed way to compromise their health. You can damage them by being too rough when you push them back or by cutting them incorrectly. Even regular, everyday activities can hurt them. If you spend a lot of time washing dishes, the soap and water can cause your nails, skin, and cuticles to dry out. Polish remover that contains acetone can have a similar effect. Avoid this by wearing gloves whenever you wash dishes to protect your hands and using a remover that doesn’t have acetone in it.

Taking good care of your cuticles may seem unnecessary, but the fact is that healthy cuticles help protect your nails and keep them healthy too. Healthy nails are beautiful, and healthy cuticles won’t distract from them the way less cared for ones will. Remember to take good care of every part of your hands so they can do their job to take good care of you.
